In the trailer, Ashley calls the property the largest investment they've ever made. They also said that it was not the right time to purchase a property but it was a "unicorn property." After finally deciding to turn this into a full-time profession, the couple were able to rescue the many houses in Galveston. The reason why they called their firm Save 1900 was because they tried to preserve old houses that survived the 1900 storm.

I was worried the hotel would be loud and rowdy with it being so close to spectrum center after a concert but it wasn’t at all. Seems like the staff have good control of the property as a whole. The staff and room are very accommodating. The room was large, and even had a kitchen, dishes, a decent sized fridge and all for a decent price. Nothing out of the ordinary for a hotel but decent.

Our lounge is the perfect spot to relax after a long day by the pool or at the beach. Meet up with friends at the hotel or make new ones. Last week, I was tired beyond Madeline Kahn tired; however, I made a journey to Mansard House on Sunday morning, bravely driving down the beach road to the ferry. This is because I thought either the jeeps being driven by drunk 20-year-olds at spring break had already been arrested or that they were still sleeping it off. You know, we see their frowning faces or mugshots on the Galveston County Sherriff’s Office website each year.

"Approximately 300 people were arrested," New York Mayor Eric Adams said on Wednesday. That number includes people who were arrested at City College — an institution in the City University of New York system that was a destination for a crowd of demonstrators who marched from Columbia University. My fascination with Hamilton is not only as a patron, but as a playwright, I marvel at the exceptional staging, casting, directing...every aspect of this masterpiece is so on point and flawless. I celebrate this marvelous, innovative, creative genius, Lin-Manuel Miranda who have given us a timeless treasure that will be relished for a lifetime. I predict that his name will be mentioned on the same sphere as William Shakespeare...sheer brilliance. Who would have ever thought that we would see one of our founding father's lives being portrayed on stages worldwide underscored by the urban music of Hip-Hop? Gaudi's Barcelona: A Complete Visitor's Guide Updated 2024

gaudi house barcelona

Casa Milà, also known as La Pedrera (the quarry) was designed by Gaudí and built from 1906–1912. The building was commissioned by the industrialist Pere Milà and his wife Roser Segimon. The Pavellons of Finca Güell in Pedralbes marked Gaudí’s first commission from the man who would become his main patron. Gaudí worked on the project from 1884 to 1887, re-landscaping the garden and building the two gatehouses, which were intended to be the caretaker’s house and the stables. The Basílica i Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Família is a Roman Catholic basilica designed by Antoni Gaudí (1852–1926) and probably the most emblematic of all Barcelona’s attractions.

Why the locals in Barcelona are hiding Gaudi’s Park Guell bus route from tourists

Casa Calvet is one of Gaudí’s earliest and most conservative designs, with a more conventional appearance compared to Gaudí’s later works. That said, Casa Calvet still bears the architect’s distinctive touch, with subtle nods to nature and innovative elements that set it apart from the surrounding buildings. Güell Palace was designed as a private residence for Güell and his family, and Palau Güell showcases Gaudí’s innovative approach to architecture and his mastery of space, light, and materials.

Guide to Tarragona

Another one of Gaudí’s famous residential buildings, Casa Milà is renowned for its undulating stone facade and wrought-iron balconies. The staircases also house the water tanks; some of which are snail-shaped. One of the most notable elements of the building is the roof, crowned with skylights, staircase exits, fans, and chimneys. All of these elements, constructed out of brick covered with lime, broken marble, or glass have a specific architectural function but are also real sculptures integrated into the building. Josep Batlló died in 1934 and the house was kept in order by the wife until her death in 1940. After the death of the two parents, the house was kept and managed by the children until 1954.

More Gaudí architecture in Barcelona

One of the key features of Colònia Güell is the crypt of the church, known as the Crypt of the Colònia Güell, which Gaudí designed as a prototype for his later masterpiece, the Sagrada Família. The crypt showcases Gaudí’s innovative structural techniques, with a series of hyperbolic paraboloid vaults creating a striking religious space. There is also an extra option to add access to one of the Sagrada Familia towers to your ticket – either the Passion Façade or the Nativity Façade Towers which both have gorgeous views of the city. Access to the tower will be exactly 1 hour after your selected time to access the Basilica.

You can also see Gaudí’s use of colours and the chimney pots with the Trencadis artwork. This technique, pioneered by Gaudí, uses a mosaic of colourful ceramic tiles. Vitruvius’ formulation of the three mandates of architecture is closer to the discovery of a natural law than an opinionated directive.

If we had to recommend just one of the Gaudí Houses to visit in Barcelona then it would be the stunning Casa Batlló. Dan got the Barcelona bug more than 10 years ago and loves to write about the city’s history, culture, food and events. In photos, many of these places look beyond impressive, so I can only imagine what they will look like in person. I loved this and learned something new, plus added a couple of things to my itinerary for when we can travel again, the lamp posts, the tiles, and Bellesguard (gorgeous). My digital travel planner template has everything you need to plan your vacation. And keep track of your travels every day with my digital and printable travel journal.

After building the market space, public arena and guard’s house they opened a model home to the public but never received any interest. Eventually the plans were dropped and Gaudí moved in to the home where he remained until his death in 1926. In addition to the crypt, Colònia Güell also features a number of residential buildings, a school, a cooperative store, and other amenities designed by Gaudí and his collaborators. While these structures may lack the grandeur and scale of Gaudí’s more famous works, they still reflect his distinctive architectural style, with organic forms, colourful tilework, and intricate details. To learn more about Gaudí’s designs and to spot details you might miss alone, a guided tour is a great way to get more information about the Sagrada Familia than it is possible to get on your own.

As the park gained popularity over the years, locals have quickly tired of the tourists who clog up the buses. But instead of rallying in the streets, locals have found a better way to control the situation. Humanity is not doomed to have bad architecture forever, and by looking back to the example of Antoni Gaudí’s life and work, we can again find our way. Although Gaudí might be best known for large projects with almost overwhelming amounts of ornamentation, at Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya visitors can appreciate the smaller details.

A Complete Guide To All 14 Gaudí Barcelona Buildings

Palau Güell (yes it’s the same Güell from Park Güell) is back in the city centre and is often overlooked. Gaudí actually worked on several projects for Eusebi Güell, one of them being an extension to his family home – Palau Güell. Save time in Barcelona and book your tickets to the best Gaudi attractions in advance. If there’s one thing that all Gaudí architecture has in common, it’s their connection to nature, with movement. A house in vivid colors, decorated with ceramic tiles, with lots of amazing details. The Pavellons de la Finca Güell, located within the grounds of the Güell estate in the Pedralbes neighbourhood of Barcelona, represent another unique architectural gem designed by Antoni Gaudí.

Gaudí’s method of architecture points us towards a better way to approach designing new buildings and places. Gaudí combined his study of nature with an intense study of classic Gothic cathedrals. In a rare trip outside of his native Catalonia, he attended the 1878 World’s Fair to exhibit a glove display he had made for a Catalonian manufacturer. While in Paris, Gaudí discovered the work of French restorationist and architect Viollet-Le-Duc, who had rebuilt decayed ancient towns and cathedrals, including the ancient city of Carcassonne and Notre Dame in Paris. Le-Duc never rebuilt buildings exactly as they were, but honored the spirit of the buildings while adding his own flourishes. Gaudí also studied the work of Englishmen John Ruskin and William Morris, and added elements from the Moorish architecture left behind in Spain after the Reconquista.

Not only is it beautiful (like all his other works) but it has so many hidden gems to discover. It isn’t open to the public (yet), but you can still appreciate the magnificent facade. It’s a few blocks away from Passeig de Gracià so it’s quite easy to make a quick detour to see the outside. The park was originally designed as a gated community but it wasn’t successful enough to be completed. Only two homes were ever built; the model house that Gaudí eventually moved into, and another one further up the hill.

In 1993, the current owners of Casa Batlló bought the home and continued refurbishments throughout the whole building.[6] Two years later, in 1995, Casa Batlló began to hire out its facilities for different events. More than 2,500 square meters of rooms within the building were rented out for many different functions. Due to the building's location and the beauty of the facilities being rented, the rooms of Casa Batlló were in very high demand and hosted many important events for the city. In 2005, Casa Batlló became an UNESCO World Heritage Site among the other Works of Antoni Gaudí, and is visited by people from around the world. Acquired by the Figueres family in 1900, all that remained of the castle was a few walls. The Teresian College is one of Gaudí’s earliest works and can be attributed to his neo-Gothic period, inspired by Medieval Gothic architecture of Catalonia, the Balearics and Roussillon in particular. Perhaps the most famous of all Gaudí’s designs, the Sagrada Família is a Roman Catholic basilica which has been under construction since 1882. Gaudí was well aware that he would not be around to see its completion but left plans to guide future architects and masons.

Why the locals in Barcelona are hiding Gaudis Park Guell bus route from tourists

For those who wish to sit and enjoy the view, the low yet long and winding wall features an uninterrupted bench. Although anyone can purchase a ticket and visit nowadays, it used to be the home of the Battló family, who gave Gaudí freedom to do practically whatever he wanted when redesigning this then-ordinary building. The architect took advantage of this freedom, and turned Casa Battló into one of the most unique locations in the city; the house now attracts one million visitors each year.

Antoni Gaudí in Barcelona: the 10 Major Works

Park Güell is another Barcelona location that demonstrates Gaudí’s love of nature and color. At the entrance, visitors are greeted by two building that flaunt Gaudi’s eccentric style. The buildings, once the porter’s residence and lodge but now a gift shop and small museum, resemble gingerbread houses. Their brown stone exteriors are contrasted with dozens of colorful circles and patterns lining the many windows, with elaborate tile mosaics for the roofs. On the double staircase past the entrance, almost everything is a mosaic, from the white tile and stone stairs to the colorful tiles on the walls on either side. There is a series of intricate structures between the staircases, with breaks in the stairs to allow visitors to get a better view.

You risk waiting in an hour-long line (or longer) if you buy at the park. So make sure you took all the pictures and saw everything you wanted to before you leave. You can see part of the restricted zone from the free areas but it isn’t the same as being surrounded by it all.

The blocks were cut to follow the plot of the projection of the model, then raised to their location and adjusted to align in a continuous curve to the pieces around them. The Gaudí House Museum shows the more personal side of the architect, as well as furniture and other items he designed or that were executed under his guidance. As an architect, lifelong traveler, and avid explorer, I've visited over 139 countries, immersing myself in diverse cultures and seeking out the hidden gems of our world. As you can see, Gaudí’s architecture is full of unusual and unexpected characteristics that are not seen in other buildings, let alone other cities in the world. Last but not least is one of Gaudí’s very first projects – the fountain located at the Parc de la Ciutadella, one of Barcelona’s most famous parks.

I also recommend checking out these hotel deals in Barcelona with Booking.com, or hunting for some cute, well-located apartments with Vrbo. While officially known as Casa Batlló, the local name for the building is Casa dels ossos, or House of Bones, due to its visceral, skeletal organic design. The complex is composed of two buildings linked by a common monumental cast-iron gate adorned with Art Nouveau vegetal fantasies and a medallion with the “G” of Güell. It features a wrought-iron grille in the shape of a dragon spreading its menacing bat-like wings while showing its forked tongue coming out of its gaping maws. Unfortunately, after Güell lost profits from his business, construction was halted in 1914 with only the crypt completed.

'An impossible dream': What it's like building Barcelona's La Sagrada Família 140 years on.

Construction process

Originally intended as a housing development project for the elite of Barcelona, Park Güell instead became a park. It was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984 and now stands among the top tourist attractions in the city. Between 1888 and 1890, Gaudí led the construction of the school and headquarters of the religious order of the Teresians in the village of Sant Gervasi de Casseroles, now a neighborhood of Barcelona. We’ll cover the ten major projects of the great Catalan architect and their unique stories.

Unfortunately, he was killed by a tram in 1926 and never got to see his masterpiece completed. La Sagrada Familia is a huge cathedral in Barcelona, known for its unique design, featuring a combination of Gothic and Modernist architectural styles and drawing heavily on the influence of nature. This is perhaps Gaudí’s most famous work, begun in 1882 and still under construction more than 100 years later. La Sagrada Familia is one of the most iconic landmarks in Barcelona, and a symbol of the city.

Casa Batlló by Gaudí

Gaudí transformed what was once a conventional 19th-century townhouse into a fantastical masterpiece, incorporating organic curving shapes, colourful mosaic tiles, and stained glass windows throughout the building. Free exhibitions often are held on the first floor, which also provides some opportunity to see the interior design. There is a charge for entrance to the apartment on the fourth floor and the roof. The noble floor is accessed through a private entrance hall that uses skylights resembling tortoise shells and vaulted walls in curving shapes. On the noble floor there is a spacious landing with direct views of the blue tiling of the building well.

Casa Milá (La Pedrera)

However, it wasn’t long until he developed his own style that has set him apart from all others. You can’t visit Barcelona without seeing Gaudi’s influence everywhere you go. He’s the city’s most famous architect and helped shape the design of the city during its booming 19th and early 20th century.

Gaudí was a prolific architect and wandering around Barcelona, you’re sure to bump into many of his major and lesser works. More than that, you’ll see his influence throughout the city as other architects and his students copied his style in their own work. I often look at buildings and go “Ahh that must be by Gaudi too” only to find out it’s not. It gets very busy so make sure to get skip-the-line tickets so you can beat the line.

You’re able to see a bit of Gaudí’s process, and the progression of building a house. No, seriously, it’s like you’ve been transported out of Barcelona to another world up there. Park Güell is such a magical place full of colour and life that you’ll want to see it up close to appreciate all the detailed mosaic work. The design alludes to the legend of St. George slaying a dragon to save the princess. Unlike the Sagrada Familia, the ticket price here is too high in my mind to merit going inside.

And discover all the candy-colored secrets of this jaw-dropping summer house.. On June 7, 1926, going to the church of Saint-Philippe Néri, Gaudi was overthrown by a tramway, which left him unconscious. Taken for a beggar, without papers and of neglected aspect with his old and worn clothes, he was not rescued immediately. He was buried on June 12, in the chapel of Our Lady of Carmel in the crypt of the Sagrada Família, in the presence of an immense crowd. Antoni Gaudí, one of the most universal figures of Catalan culture and international architecture, devoted more than 40 years to the Temple of the Sagrada Família. They are my favorite search engine because they search websites and airlines around the globe so you always know no stone is left unturned.

The lampposts in Plaça Reial were among the earliest public works commissioned to Antoni Gaudí. Designed in 1878, when he was just 26 years old, these Gaudí lampposts reflect the architect’s early experimentation with organic forms and decorative elements inspired by nature. Take time to explore the rest of the park as well as the famous parts, the views get better and better the further up you go. Once you’ve had your fill I’d recommend leaving through one of the exits at the top to visit the Mirador de Joan Sales, one of the best views in Barcelona.

There are also colorful tile mosaics, much like the ones that appear across many works by Gaudí, and drawings he made to show how his buildings should look when completed. “Gaudi’s innovative use of ‘trencadís’ (mosaic made from broken ceramic tiles) and his approach to creating curved surfaces were groundbreaking,” Tamayo said. Visitors can also walk through the woodland regions and see the wide range of vegetation and wildlife, including many bird species.
