Usually, when you’re daydreaming about whether you could actually move into one of the most iconic childhood homes of the ’90s, the answer is a resounding no. Rincon Hill was built on top of “Rincon Hill,” a hill once part of the original San Francisco peninsula that ended at Rincon Point. You can find some great waterfront restaurants in this neighborhood and also easily get to the San Francisco Bay Trail.

The film was based on the novel written by Anne Fine and became an instant global hit upon its release. Some scenes were reportedly filmed on a set in a warehouse in the Richmond District of San Francisco. This would be similar to how Chris Colombus filmed Home Alone just a few years earlier, using a mixture of a real house and sets. What most people probably won’t realize is, the movie is based on the British book, Madame Doubtfire.

Most of the interior scenes were filmed on location (Douglas noted to look for the pattern in the hardwood floor), but the kitchen was built at a soundstage in the city. It just hit the market for the first time since the late ’90s, which means we finally have a chance to see inside the real house and compare it to the rooms we saw onscreen. And let's not forget the highly memorable staircase, which the kids are always seemingly running up or down together. It figures prominently in the actual house, and the front door opens right to it, just like in the film.
